East Durham College is a completely inclusive college, offering a wide range of opportunities and support for learners aged from 16-24 with special educational needs & disabilities.
At both our Peterlee and Houghall campuses we have a dedicated foundation department for SEND learners; this specialist provision focuses on the development of the individual, learning everything from essential life skills such as cooking and money management to maths, English, media and more.
Depending on campus, foundation learners can also gain the opportunity to interact with other course areas; for example at Peterlee they may work in our boxing gym with our coach to improve fitness, or at Houghall in Durham, they might visit animal care for a lesson on caring for animals.
At Houghall we also have a specialist provision named Derwent, which is for students on the autistic spectrum. Learners at Derwent have their own building away from the main campus, and with specialist support from staff and a unique curriculum tailored to the learner, Derwent gives fantastic opportunities for learners to develop their skills.
