Health & Social Care

Thousands of people in the UK need care. Many people can't manage by themselves due to old age, disabilities or many other factors and they rely on the care given by health & social care professionals to enjoy a better quality of life.

As a health and social care apprentice, you'll gain real, authentic experience of working in the health and social care industry. You'll be taken on by an actual employer in this sector, where you'll learn new skills alongside industry professionals and also at college, where you may be required to complete additional work.

Apprentices are eligible for earning an apprenticeship wage, which is a minimum value employers must pay apprentices, set out by the government. Apprenticeships may also lead to a full-time job after completion, or you can move on to further training such as a higher level course, a university degree or even higher apprenticeships.

What Type of Jobs Could I Find Myself Doing as a Health & Social Care Apprentice?

The role you may end up doing as an apprentice will vary depending on the level of apprenticeship you take, as well as the role the employer is offering.

Some examples of the type of work social care apprentices can do include:

At Level 2/3

  • Health Care Assistant
  • Domiciliary Care Worker
  • Activities Worker
  • Support Worker
  • Senior Care Worker
  • Community Support/Outreach Worker
  • Inclusion Officer

At Level 4+

  • Nursing (Child and Adult)
  • Midwifery
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Specialist Community Nursing

The roles available to you will vary depending on your previous experience, your qualifications and the type of work the employer is offering to you.

Many apprentices use the qualification and skills they've gained during their health and social care apprenticeship to move on to further education. For example, you could work as a health care assistant apprentice, earn your level 2 qualification and move on to a level 3 role as a support worker. You could then stay in your career (if the employer offers you a full time position) or you could move on to do a degree at university specialising in something such as nursing.

There are so many opportunities in this sector - that's why you should strongly consider a career as an apprentice in health and social care.
