Making a Career in Sport

There's so much more to sport than just playing it for a hobby. With hard work, dedication and a sport qualification from EDC, you could easily move into a number of sport-related jobs.

Team EDC

Let us introduce you to Team East Durham, EDC's very own dedicated athlete development programme.

Available for all students, we offer a number of Sports Development Centres including:

Team East Durham gives you the opportunity to train with out top quality coaching staff, and the opportunity to also compete against other sporting teams from around the area.

Better still, ALL students who join a Team East Durham sports development centre are eligible for an exclusive bronze Scholarship package. For exceptionally talented athletes (for example, playing for a club or at county level), the college also offers Silver & Gold scholarship packages too.

Our Incredible Sport Facilities

Whether you're out on the pitch, about to take that penalty, inside in the sports hall, lining up the perfect three-pointer or just building up your strength in the gym, EDC has absolutely everything you need to enhance your sporting career.

We've invested huge amounts in the development of our sports facilities, giving students access to some of the very best facilities in the region.

You can expect to find all of the following at East Durham College

  • Double Sports Hall - ideal for any indoor sport, with seating available for up to 500 people
  • All-Weather 3G Pitch - suitable for both 11-a-side and 7-a-side football games, as well as rugby
  • On-Site Gym, Impact Health & Fitness - with completely FREE*, complimentary access for East Durham College students while you're studying with us (*£5 induction charge)
  • Dedicated Boxing Gym - with training rings, bags, pads, gloves and everything else you'll need
  • Rugby Pitches - dedicated pitch at our Houghall campus for our rugby students
  • Professional Cricket Training Facilities - we work in partnership with Durham University, and cricket students can use their state-of-the-art facilities at their Maiden Castle campus
  • Physiotherapist On-Site - on-hand treatment for sports injuries to get you back to full fitness in the quickest time possible

On top of that, the college also provides everything you need including all of your sporting equipment and kit (some charges may apply for kit).

Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching

At EDC, we also offer an exciting two-year programme that leads to a recognised level 5 qualification in sports coaching (awarded by the University of Sunderland).

This course gives opportunities to gain additional sport & exercise qualifications, to further enhance your knowledge and skills, are accessible alongside the programme to optimise your employability. Successful completion of the programme allows optional progression on to a third year at the University of Sunderland for the full BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching. This course will allow you to develop the skills necessary for progression into careers such as sports coaching, sports development, teaching, health & fitness vocations, leisure centre/events management, physiotherapy and many more.
