So you're thinking about a potential career in accountancy? At East Durham College, our Level 2 accountancy course is the perfect starting point.
Available exclusively to adult learners above the age of 19, our Level 2 accountancy course focuses on developing your accountancy knowledge. It's designed for complete beginners to the world of accounts, so no problem if you've got no previous experience!
At EDC, we get it - adult learners have other commitments! That's why we offer our accountancy courses part-time. The Level 2 course programme that you're currently reading about is available as two different sessions - this particular one runs during the day, but we've also got a separate evening class ideal for those who may be working while the daytime sessions are running.
Topics
Throughout this course, you'll get to know all about finance, and how accountancy plays an integral role for every business.
There are a wide variety of different topics which will be covered as part of this course, including:
- Double Entry Bookkeeping: the base of all accounting practices, including preparing trial balances and profit and loss reports.
- Basic Costing for Manufacturing Accounts - This topic will teach you the basis of calculating of costs associated with in industry such as manufacturing costs and labouring costs.
- An Introduction to Using a Computerised Accounting System – This topic is an introduction into the computerised accounts of Sage Line 50 which is the most recognised accountant package currently used in business.
Job opportunities after this course
You will be recognised as an accountant technician. You could choose to start a freelance career within accounting and finance or progress onto university. You will be partly qualified along the route to becoming an accounting technician, other career options could include: Accounts Assistants, Purchase Ledger Clarke, Sales Ledger Clarke and or Book Keeping Assistant.
Further study options after this course
On completion of the course you can progress onto the level 3 AAT programme, into employment as accounts Clarke or accounts assistant or onto the level 3 AAT Apprenticeship.
Entry requirements
Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. In addition to the entry requirements, all students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when students are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled on to the right course for them to achieve and progress.
Entry onto any course at EDC may have entry requirements in addition to exam results; this includes but is not limited to DBS checks, references, fitness to practice and at times physical requirements to be capable of achieving the practical elements of the course without assistance. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal.
How is this course assessed?
Assessments will take place via the completion of coursework and external exams.

This is a part-time course programme taking place over 1 year.
Sessions are run on two days of the week during the daytime.
