Media is All Around Us
Media is at the heart of our lives every single day. Whether it's the TV, radio, websites, YouTube content, Netflix, videogames or even social media, we, as a society, constantly consume media in many different forms.
As media is more popular than ever, the demand for creative, passionate individuals who can succeed in the media industry is also very high. Thanks to EDC's range of creative media courses, you can take your first steps towards your career in media.
Perhaps you want to be in front of the microphone, the star of your own radio show. Maybe you'd prefer to be behind the scenes, producing everything and making sure it runs smoothly. Or perhaps you're a natural-born personality, ready for the TV or starting your own successful Youtube channel, or you're the person who'll be operating the camera, making sure everything is filmed and edited to perfection. Whatever you want to be, there's a place for you on East Durham College's media courses.
Our Sixth Form (ED6) also offers media as an A Level course, or you can take a vocational route instead.

Media Courses and Facilities
Our media programmes provide a blend of vocational skills and academic knowledge in the study of film, television, radio, print, photography and media production techniques across a range of genres and mediums; as well as training in how to produce your own material such as short films, TV shows, radio dramas, animations, promos and multi-camera recordings. So, if you are interested in developing filmmaking, audio creation and post-production skills this is the ideal route for you.
Here at East Durham College, we have some excellent media facilities and resources. You will have access to a range of professional video cameras and audio recording equipment, lighting kits, gels and reflectors, a television studio with a green screen and a dedicated Mac editing suite with Final Cut Pro X editing software. There is also a professional recording studio with industry-standard Pro Tools HD kit, a radio broadcasting studio, 220 seat producing and receiving theatre and TV gallery.
Students have many opportunities to apply their developing skills in the professional arena and in the past have helped to run and manage the highly successful Youth Music night, Freaky Weasel; performed on P&O cruise ferries, danced in the gala opening of Sunderland Aquatic Centre; led Youth Theatre sessions, and produced commercial videos for The Primary Care Trust, East Durham Homes and The Stadium of Light.
Exciting Trips & Activities
As a department we also organise trips, both locally and nationally to broaden students’ experience and provide exposure to professional productions. In recent years these have included London visits to the West End, Edinburgh International Festival, Newcastle Theatre Royal, Newcastle Arena, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Further afield students have had the opportunity to take part in a three day Creative Industries trip to Holland involving media, music and performing arts students. This usually includes a cabaret style performance opportunity on board a cruise ferry and a band performance in a Dutch venue.
The Lubetkin Theatre at the College's Peterlee campus provides a wide programme of dance, drama, music, cinema shows and visiting speakers - plus visits to Tyneside cinema film-screenings; there are loads of different experiences to help students develop.
Many of the staff working in the department are themselves active professionals within the creative industries and bring their vast experience of the sector to the delivery of courses.
