Course overview
This course is designed for anyone who is considering a career in an early years setting, this could also include parents and volunteers who would like to play a part in early years settings such as pre-schools.
Topics
The units include subjects such as the value of play, roles and responsibilities of carers and volunteers and the importance of developing links in the local community. The role of the Early Years Practitioner is also explored and practical simulated activities for early years are completed in the course.

• Practical activities
• Group work activities
• Independent research (supported by your lecturer)
• Scenarios and case studies
• Simulated activities used in nursery to promote the EYFS outcomes

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however for progression onto further study on a related course learners would require a clear DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. In addition to the entry requirements, all students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when students are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled on to the right course for them to achieve and progress.
Entry onto any course at EDC may have entry requirements in addition to exam results; this includes but is not limited to DBS checks, references, fitness to practice and at times physical requirements to be capable of achieving the practical elements of the course without assistance. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal.
How is this course assessed?
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include optional tasks, coursework or portfolio of evidence.
When does the course start?
Thursday 16th January 2025. 8 weeks on a Thursday evening.
Length of course
This course is delivered at our Peterlee Campus over an 8 week period by one of our specialist lecturers.
