Our courses are designed for adults who want to progress in counselling, expand their skills or start a new career. Open to adults across Durham, Sunderland, Hartlepool and the surrounding area, courses are taught part-time, so you can study around work.

Counselling overview

Qualified counsellors support people with issues such as mental health conditions, difficult life circumstances and housing situations.

What you'll study

Your course will help you build the skills at the heart of counselling, including:

core counselling skills and boundaries
counselling theories, including person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural approaches
equal opportunities and ethics, including the BACP Ethical Framework
personal development and self-reflection

Courses are taught by experienced tutors who still work in counselling, with a strong focus on the person-centred approach. Assessment is by portfolio.

Our courses are your first step towards working as a counsellor. You can also continue your studies at EDC through our part-time Level 4/5 Foundation Degree in Counselling.
