Brickwork overview 

Bricklaying is a hands-on, practical trade with excellent job prospects across the UK. With construction continuing to grow and employers reporting skills shortages, qualified bricklayers are in high demand – and can earn very competitive salaries.  

At EDC, you'll learn the key skills, techniques and professional behaviours needed to start a successful career in construction.

What you'll study 

Across our bricklaying programmes, you'll develop skills in: 

• setting out and building solid and cavity walls
• blockwork and brickwork techniques
• constructing arches, corners and features
• mixing materials and using industry-standard tools
• health, safety and site awareness
• understanding construction methods and processes 

You'll learn in a supportive workshop setting, gaining confidence as you practise and refine your skills. 

Our brickwork facilities 

You'll train at our Willerby Grove Campus in our fully equipped bricklaying workshop, featuring: 

• individual work bays that mirror real site conditions
• a wide range of modern tools and materials
• dedicated spaces for both practical and theory learning
• Our construction and engineering centre of excellence gives you the environment you need to develop real, job-ready skills. 

Learning beyond the workshop 

We work closely with industry to help you understand what employers expect and how to stand out. While studying bricklaying at EDC, you'll have opportunities to take part in: 

• site visits
• career seminars and employer talks
• masterclasses
• mock interviews
• work experience placements
• student awards and recognition events 

These experiences help you build confidence, broaden your understanding of the sector and make valuable industry connections. 

Where it could lead 

Many of our Level 2 students progress directly into employment or into highly valued apprenticeships with partners through our Developing Futures partnership. 

Depending on your level of study, you could work as: 

• a bricklayer
• a site supervisor or foreman
• a self-employed contractor 

You could also progress to a construction-related apprenticeship or degree, building towards a career in site management or construction.

Fees & funding 

Course fees vary by level. Full-time courses are free for 16 to 18-year-olds. Adult students may also be eligible for funding depending on circumstances.
