Tips for Applicants - Other Selection Methods

Here at East Durham College we place high importance on fair recruitment and selection, therefore we have developed a range of selection tools to support the recruitment process.

Introduction

During this process, we are trying to gather as much information as possible to form a balanced judgement on the candidate who has the most appropriate skills, knowledge and experience.

We will always advise you in advance if we intend to use a selection method to supplement the interview process. If you are unsure of what this may be please don’t hesitate to contact us as we will chat through your concerns and provide as much clarity as we can to make you feel at ease and as confident as possible – of course we won’t be able to disadvantage any other candidates.

Examples of other selection methods that we may use here are as follows, but please note that this list is not exhaustive and we may use a different method.

Psychometric Tools

Psychometric tools include tests which can be systematically scored and administered, which are used to measure individual differences. Psychometric testing can be used by the University for the purpose of enhancing the quality and quantity of information available when selecting staff. It is likely that psychometric testing be used in addition to other methods of assessment e.g. interview, presentation, in-tray exercises, etc.

At East Durham College we would normally use one of two different types of Personality Questionnaire.

  • Insights Discover Personal Profile
  • 16PF Version 5 Personality Questionnaire

This form of assessment gives us a more rounded profile which cannot be easily assessed by other methods.

Job Simulation

These are job related assessment tools which allow you to demonstrate how you meet certain requirements in practice. They are used for assessing behavioural competencies as well as application of relevant skills and knowledge. Common simulation exercises include:

  • Micro Teach
  • Presentations
  • In-tray exercises
  • Role Play
  • Group Discussions
  • Case Studies
