Counselling & CBT Service and Well-Being

Counselling and CBT are just two of a variety of support services provided by the College. The College's Counselling & CBT Service offers confidential support to all members of the College, students and staff, and the College also contract external counselling specialists specifically to support staff mental health.

Ofsted's 2024 inspection report praised the College on staff well-being and said:

'Leaders and managers place a high priority on the well-being of their staff. They ensure that staff have access to counselling services and facilities to support their physical and mental health, including a gym, fitness classes and a programme of social events. As a result, staff feel supported and valued by leaders and managers, and contribute proudly to the college’s mission.'

Continuous Professional Development

The College is committed to providing development opportunities for its entire staff. In addition to on the job training, there is a comprehensive training and development programme. Training needs are reviewed regularly as an integral part of the staff probation and annual Performance Appraisal Review process.

Ofsted's inspection report also commented on East Durham College's professional development:

'Leaders and managers provide many opportunities for staff to enhance their craft of teaching and keep up to date with the professional practice of the industries to which their curriculums are aligned. For example, teachers access a range of courses through the East Durham Educator programme to understand teaching essentials and evidence-based approaches, which they implement in their classrooms. They earn badges to showcase their commitment to professional learning and are encouraged to share practice with their peers through coaching and training events, including an annual teaching and learning conference.'

Cyclescheme Get tax free bikes for work

Get fit, lose weight, help the environment and save money! East Durham College administers this benefit in partnership with Cyclescheme Ltd, the UK’s No.1 Cycle to Work provider. Cyclescheme work with local, independent bicycle retailers and have over 1,800 partner stores nationwide. Employees are able to sign up to the scheme in order to obtain bicycles and safety equipment whilst saving income tax and national insurance. You can obtain bicycles and safety equipment, usually up to a limit of £1000. The scheme works by having the bike and equipment cost taken from your gross salary. Hence, you can spread the cost of a new bike over 12 months.

Flexible Working

The College recognises that at various stages in an employee's working life, domestic and family commitments and responsibilities potentially reduce or hinder their ability to fulfil work responsibilities. To help reduce anxiety and stress amongst our workforce during these times, the College recognises these commitments and responsibilities and offers practical help through its policies on flexible working.

FREE Gym Membership

All College staff have free access to the College gym at the Peterlee Campus. Opening times are 7am to 10pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm weekends.

Hairdressing & Beauty Salons

One of the College’s many successes is the Hair and Beauty courses that we run for students. This means there are always students in need of models. A variety of treatments are available from massages and manicures to hair styling and reflexology. All are available at discounted prices.

Health Scheme

The College runs a voluntary health scheme. The health scheme cost deductions are taken after tax and national insurance.

Induction

All new staff at the College will receive a comprehensive induction.

Learning Resource Centre

The College has two Learning Resource Centres. One is based at the Willerby Grove site and one is based at the Houghall Campus. Staff are entitled to use these facilities to assist them with their work or any qualifications they may be undertaking. The facilities also hold industry magazines.

Pension Schemes

Lecturing staff have an entitlement to join the Teachers' pension scheme. Business support staff have an entitlement to join The Local Government Pension Scheme. Management staff can join either scheme depending on their area of work. Both schemes involve an employer contribution on behalf of the College.
