Course overview

The course is a Level 1 Award in Creative Craft with the emphasis on ceramics, delivered on one evening per week for twelve weeks. A range of hand building techniques will be introduced through short projects that build into a portfolio.

There are three units to complete, where you will have the opportunity to explore craft ideas through ceramics; work with a range of resources and then create, present and review your final item.

The Level 1 course is designed to give you an introduction to basic hand-building techniques

Job opportunities after this course

Learners completing the Level 1 Award will gain the underpinning knowledge, techniques and skills to be able to perform basic skills such as coiling and slab building as well as decorative techniques to add embellishment.

Knowledge and skills gained on the course could lead to entry-level work in a pottery studio and would allow the learner the ability to design and build hand-crafted items for a more sustainable way of living.

Further study options after this course

After studying the Level 1 Award, there is the opportunity to progress to a Level 2 Certificate delivered on an evening, or alternatively enrol on the UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design which is delivered as a full time course across several days each week.

Entry requirements

This is a Level 1 course, therefore learners need to be able to have a basic level of literacy and numeracy to enable them to complete assignments.

The ceramics course is only available to adults over the age of 19. For learners under 19, we do offer vocational programmes in Art & Design at Levels 2 and 3.

Final approval is given by the Assistant Principal.

How is this course assessed?

Each learner will build their own portfolio of evidence and produce hand-built ceramics items. The portfolio will be internally assessed by the tutor before being approved by the External Moderator. The moderator visits either at the end of the course* / the end of year*

*Depending on the number of cohorts scheduled across an academic year.

The next cohort will start on Thursday February 5th 5-8.30pm and will run for twelve weeks.
