East Durham College is delighted to announce a first of its kind partnership with legendary former England, Sunderland AFC and Tottenham Hotspur footballer Jermain Defoe that will bring together the highest standards in sports academia and football training for 16-18 year olds in our region.

As part of a brand-new series of apprenticeships developed to align with the needs of science manufacturing employers across the region, East Durham College have invested in an immersive learning experience that is set to shake up the industry.

As the biggest employer in the North East, the health and health science sector is set to benefit from a huge skills training boost as part of a £3.6 million government-funded initiative to plug skills gaps and grow the economy.

Recruiting and training new talent, as well as upskilling existing employees can be time-consuming and expensive for science manufacturing employers. East Durham College (EDC) has a groundbreaking solution that could change the game for manufacturing businesses across the region.

Suzanne Duncan, Principal and Chief Executive of East Durham College, will retire in the summer of 2024 after twelve successful years at the College. 

A global battery technology supplier, headquartered in the North East, has welcomed 10 apprentices to the business, six of whom are completing their Engineering Technician Apprenticeships with EDC.

Apprenticeships are a critical component of the North East’s skills provision. Looking at the Local Skills Improvement Plans which cover the North East LEP area - for the North of Tyne, and the four North East authorities - you can see the importance of technical skills for the future of the region’s economy.

East Durham College has been awarded £881,000 to help County Durham employers boost skills in their workforce and overcome skills gaps affecting their organisations. Following the successful bid to Durham County Council, East Durham College has been awarded the funds to help local businesses, located in South West Durham and East Durham, with tailored training solutions to help develop their employees.
