Student Life and Enrichment

Freshers’ Fair

Every September, the SU hosts Freshers’ Fair to welcome new and returning students.

Local organisations, services and community partners join us to share information on wellbeing, careers, finance, volunteering and the student support available as you settle into college life. Expect plenty of stalls, fun activities and free giveaways.

Come along, meet new friends and find out what’s on offer at EDC.

Clubs and societies

EDC has a wide range of clubs and societies, from Board Games to Multisport.

Don’t see one you like?

Speak to the Student Wellbeing and Enrichment Coordinator about starting your own – you can do this at any point in the year.

Joining a club or society shows commitment, teamwork and looks great on your CV.

Want to get involved?

The SU plans fun trips throughout the year. Past trips have included ice skating, rock climbing and theme parks.

Keep an eye out around college or contact the SU to find out what’s coming up.

Students talking

Visitors

We regularly welcome visiting speakers from across the region to our campuses. They bring fresh insight and real-world experience to your course.

Visiting speakers can:

  • deepen your understanding of a topic
  • share current information and different points of view
  • connect classroom learning to the world of work
  • explain the latest developments in your sector
  • share their own career journeys
  • inform you about apprenticeships, university and career options
  • explain what skills employers look for
  • inspire your next steps

Community action

Every full-time student completes a community action project to give something back locally.

To deliver a successful project:

  • get to know your community
  • plan something realistic and achievable
  • identify what resources you’ll need
  • celebrate your achievements

Your project should include at least one of these:

  • Marketing – raise awareness of a local issue, or work with community groups to tackle one
  • Manual – improve a local building, park, play area, street, riverbank or community space
  • Creative – create something for your local area, such as artwork or photography
  • Social – run an event that brings people together

Recent EDC student projects:

  • Creative Industries students organised a large-scale donation for the Ukraine appeal.
  • Animal Care students designed postcards using pictures of Houghall animals to tackle loneliness in older people, sent to Age UK.
  • Technical Academy students arranged a charity football match for the OddBalls Foundation.
