Learner Support Team

Our Learner Support team helps students with learning difficulties and disabilities get the right support, from application through to course completion.

We work closely with you, your parents/carers and external agencies to make sure the right support is in place.

Support can include:

  • transition support
  • learning support plans
  • classroom support arrangements
  • exam access arrangements
  • assistive technology
  • Dyslexia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD support
  • personalised learning strategies
  • progression support
  • specialist communicators
  • accessible changing and toilet facilities
  • counselling

How it works

  1. Apply online at any time. Apply early for a smoother transition.
  2. Once we receive your application (or hear from your Local Authority), you’re guaranteed an interview to discuss your needs and aspirations.
  3. We’ll stay in touch ahead of enrolment, including college tours, to help you settle in.
  4. Once you’ve enrolled, your Curriculum Leader and Progression Coach will work with the Learner Support team to review your support regularly.

Alongside your studies, you’ll take part in a tutorial programme covering confidence, communication and community awareness. You can also join enrichment activities such as:

  • Duke of Edinburgh Award
  • offsite trips and employer visits
  • open days
  • volunteering and sporting enrichment
  • charity events and performing arts
  • educational visits and competitions
  • construction projects
  • The King’s Trust

Financial support

Education is generally free up to age 18. Funding for 16–18s comes through the Department for Education. Students 19+ may also be eligible, depending on their course and circumstances.

If you’re 16–25 with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan, you may be eligible for extra support and funding, including from health or social care services.

If you have an EHCP, SEN plan, medical need or other support need, email ALS@eastdurham.ac.uk and we’ll guide you through the next steps.
