EDC welcome Alpine Engineer
East Durham College welcomed John Allison, Lead Machinist at Alpine Formula One Team to our Peterlee campus this month for a special careers talk designed to inspire students and showcase opportunities within the world of Formula 1.
Around 150 students from a range of curriculum areas including engineering, motor vehicle, sport, IT, construction and A Levels attended the session, making it one of the college’s largest employer engagement events this year.
During the visit, students gained a behind-the-scenes insight into the engineering and manufacturing processes involved in producing Formula 1 cars, while also having the opportunity to view authentic racing components used within the sport. John shared details about his role within Alpine Formula One, his own career journey into the industry and the skills and pathways needed to succeed in high-performance engineering.
The interactive session gave students the chance to ask questions about working in Formula 1 and helped demonstrate how classroom learning can lead to exciting careers within global motorsport and advanced engineering industries.
Scott said:
“Our investment in Houghall Campus is about much more than buildings—it’s about creating an environment where students can thrive. Combined with opportunities like Formula 1 engagement and Chelsea Flower Show participation, we are building a college experience that is ambitious, inspiring, and genuinely life-changing.”
Connor Allison, who organised the visit for students from John Allison said:
“Bringing someone from Alpine Formula One into college has been an incredible opportunity for our students. For many, this is the first time they’ve had direct insight into a world-class industry like Formula 1, and you could see how engaged and inspired they were throughout. It really helps them connect what they’re learning in the classroom to real, exciting career pathways.”
The visit reflects East Durham College’s ongoing commitment to raising aspirations, strengthening employer partnerships, and providing students with opportunities to engage directly with leading industries and professionals.
