Course overview
This course is tailored towards adult learners who have an interest in undertaking small DIY jobs in and around their home, it also gives you the knowledge and skills of an acceptable tolerances on a finished product.
The course is designed to help you identify, set up and safely use hand tools and power tools.
Topics
- Health and safety exam – Multiple choice computer based.
- Basic housing task – Training task
- Architrave including how to scribe against an uneven surface (on a jig) – Assessment.
- Skirting board (on a jig) – Assessment.
- Erect studwork – Training task.
- Fit a door lining – Training task.
- Hang a door including the fitting of ironmongery (hinges, tubular mortice latch, handles and keep) – Assessment
- Fit a base unit, including the fitting of a door (adjustment), shelves, worktop with hob cut out – Assessment
- T&G Weyroc flooring with an access hatch – Assessment.
Job opportunities after this course
This qualification contributes to the progression route ( L2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry for Carpenters and Joiners) which potentially could lead into a L2 apprenticeship standard in Site Carpentry.

The progression route from the L1 Certificate would be the L2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry for Carpenters and Joiners.
Entry requirements
There are no set entry requirements. Please note there will be a lot of bending, kneeling hammering, and drilling.

How is this course assessed?
The course is assessed via four practical assessments booklets and one knowledge multiple choice exam on Health and Safety.

Length of course
This course will be running for 12 weeks, every Tuesday night, starting at 17:00 and finishing at 20:00 (3 Hours).
