Whether you're a complete beginner, a keen hobbyist or looking to turn your passion into a career, learn how to use your camera with confidence on our part-time evening course. 

Photography overview

Photography is more than taking a picture. At EDC you’ll learn how to control your camera, light your subject and choose the right lens, so you can produce images you're proud of. 

Advance your skills through workshops, seminars, lectures, study visits, and group and individual tutorials. Our course is open to all abilities – from beginners to budding photographers.

What you'll study

You'll combine theory and practice, with units that help you: 

• understanding your camera's functions and the exposure triangle
• explore the work of other photographers
• develop your own style
• present a final project in a focus of your choice, such as studio, location, commercial, documentary or experimental photography

Practical sessions have included wire wool spinning photography, car photography, paint in water and portraits. You'll build a portfolio of evidence as you go, and it's yours to keep.

At Willerby Grove Campus, you'll have access to: 

• digital photography equipment
• Mac editing suites
• specialist software, including Adobe Creative Cloud

Learning beyond the classroom

Alongside your weekly sessions, you'll take part in study visits and group and individual tutorials, with the chance to learn from other photographers' work and get feedback on your own.

Where it could lead

Many students use the course as a stepping stone to full-time study. You could progress to our Level 3 Diploma in Media or Art & Design, both of which include photography, and on to degree-level study in lens-based media or design. 

Photography skills are used across journalism, art and design, animation and forensics. You could also: 

• open your own business or studio
• work as a freelancer
• use your new skills in the work you already do
