Houghall Dog Grooming Studio
Treat your pet to a grooming experience at the Houghall Campus Dog Grooming Studio in Durham. The College runs a dog grooming studio, located in the Small Animal care Centre, which is open to the public and their dogs.
All grooming services are carried out by students studying for the City & Guilds Dog Grooming Qualifications at level 1, 2 or 3 under the expert supervision of the college tutors.
Level 2 and level 3 students are required to carry out cuts and styles specified by City & Guilds.
Your First Visit
You will be greeted by a member of the dog grooming team. Full details of your dog will be noted, and a terms and conditions form and groom card will be completed. The student will complete a basic health and temperament check whist you complete the forms.
The student will contact you once the groom is complete.
Please note: We do NOT accept dogs whose coats are in poor condition (i.e. matted). We are also unable to accept dogs with temperament issues, who are unwell or have not been vaccinated.

- De-shedding Treatment (if required)
- Hand Strip (Only available with our Level 3 students)

- Spritz of Canine Perfume
- Nails Trimmed (if required)
- Foot Pad Trim
- Hygiene Trim
Maintenance grooms are also available between scheduled full grooms to help maintain your dog's coat and condition.

All the following prices are 'from' and dependent upon the condition of the dog's coat.
Please note: At present we are only able to take cash payments.
Bath & Dry Only
- Small Dog: £10.00
- Medium Dog: £15.00
- Large Dog: £20.00
- Extra Large Dog: £25.00
Full Groom (To include cut and style)
- Small Dog: £15.00
- Medium Dog: £20.00
- Large Dog: £25.00
- Extra Large Dog: £30.00
Hand Stripping
- Only available on specific allocated days, prices from £20.00
Nail Trims Only
- Available by appointment only: £5.00
Free Grooms
Dogs may be offered a free groom if the dog is suitable for student exams, in line with the City & Guilds guidelines. This requires regular maintenance of the dog’s coat in order to achieve a breed standard style.
How To Find Us
Our Houghall Campus is located just outside Durham City Centre near Shincliffe.
On approach to the main entrance of the Houghall campus front building, please bear right and follow the road round to the main car park. The Small Animal Care Centre is on the right. Once you enter the building, the Dog Grooming Studio is to the left.
There is ample free parking.
Dog Grooming Courses at Houghall
The College runs a number of very popular part-time dog grooming courses. Houghall has an excellent reputation and these courses are always in very high demand.
The courses currently on offer include:
- City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Land-based Studies (Foundation Dog Grooming)
- City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants (7863-02)
- City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming (7863-03)
