Course overview

For many people, photography is a hobby, however what if we told you you could turn it into a career? With photography here at EDC, You'll learn the basics of photography, laying the foundations for a potential career in the industry. Furthermore, photography is a growing industry, making it the perfect time to get involved.

The course is delivered on one evening per week. Learners study a total of 60 hours and two units to gain a total of 6 credits. Practical and theoretical tasks are covered in sessions and lead to projects, enabling learners to explore their camera and manipulate images. Use of Padlet allows learners to upload, revisit work and Teams allows learners to communicate with the tutor and peers.

There are two core units designed as an introduction to the camera and to image manipulation whilst exploring different projects that cover a range of styles such as studio / location / commercial / documentary or experimental photography. You will take both units to gain the 6 credits necessary to successfully complete this course.

Job opportunities after this course

After studying the Level 1 Award in Photography, learners can progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Photography. Learners wanting to work within the sector may be able to secure entry-level posts assisting in studios.

Upon successful completion of this programme you can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Photography or look at studying Photography as part of L2 Media or Art & Design. Media and Art & Design courses are both delivered as daytime programmes.

Entry requirements

Please note that our photography course is only available to adults above the age of 19. For those who are below 19, we offer photography as part of a L2 Diploma in Media or Art & Design.

A basic level of literacy and numeracy is necessary as you are required to record your evidence, discuss with tutor and peers and log photography relevant maths work such as budgeting and camera settings.

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. In addition to the entry requirements, all students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when students are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled on to the right course for them to achieve and progress.

Entry onto any course at EDC may have entry requirements in addition to exam results; this includes but is not limited to DBS checks, references, fitness to practice and at times physical requirements to be capable of achieving the practical elements of the course without assistance. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal.

How is this course assessed?

You will create a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed internally by your tutor before being approved by an External Moderator. The Moderator will visit at the end of the course / academic year.

This 5 week course runs one day a week (Fridays) from April 26th. Sessions run 9AM-3:30PM.
