Course overview
This qualification prepares learners for further learning and training whilst developing an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting. It covers areas such as how to support the well-being of a child or young person and child and young person development. This course provides an ideal opportunity for anyone wishing to start their journey of working or volunteering in schools. It is ideal for anyone wishing to get back into education and/or start a new career journey. The course is delivered by our highly supportive lecturing team who will support you to have an enjoyable experience whilst you learn.
Topics
The course will be taught in our simulated education environment, and you will have the opportunity to learn to explore equipment used in school and how to work with children and young people.
The course covers topics that gives an understanding of types of education provision and how these work, the roles of people working in schools/colleges and how to support the wellbeing and safety of children in the school environment.
Job opportunities after this course
This course provides the first steps in starting a career journey to work in school or colleges in roles such as being a Teaching Assistant or Support Assistant. It will also give students knowledge to work in other support roles in school or to volunteer.
Further study options after this course
After completion of the course learners will be able to apply to progress to further levels of study including the Supporting teaching and Learning courses at level 2 and 3 (teaching assistant), and Early Years programmes.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
How is this course assessed?
The course is assessed through producing evidence of student learning through tasks. These tasks will form a portfolio of evidence. This is all assessed by internal assessment by lecturers in college.
When does the course start?
This 8-week courses runs on a Thursday evening starting on Thursday from 14th April 2025. Sessions run 5pm-9pm.

4 hours a week for 8 weeks. Evenings.
