Course overview
The course is a Level 1 Award in Creative Craft with the emphasis on sewing and textiles, delivered over two evenings per week for six weeks. A range of sewing and textiles areas will be introduced through short projects that build into a portfolio.
Topics
There are three units to complete, where you will have the opportunity to explore craft ideas; work with a range of resources and then create, present and review your final item.
The Level 1 course is designed to give you an introduction to basic sewing and crafting techniques.
Job opportunities after this course
Learners completing the Level 1 Award will gain the underpinning knowledge, techniques and skills to be able to perform basic skills in sewing, knitting, crocheting, felting and / or embroidering.
Knowledge and skills gained on the course could lead to work in a haberdashery or craft supplier and would allow the learner the ability to mend and repurpose fabrics for a more sustainable way of living.
Further study options after this course
After studying the Level 1 Award, there is the opportunity to progress to a Level 2 Certificate, or alternatively take a short course in Life Drawing or Level 1 Certificate in Art & Design.
Entry requirements
This is a Level 1 course, therefore learners need to be able to have a basic level of literacy and numeracy to enable them to complete assignments.
The sewing and textiles course is only available to adults over the age of 19. For learners under 19, we do offer vocational programmes in Art & Design.
Final approval is given by the Assistant Principal.
How is this course assessed?
Each learner will build their own portfolio of evidence and produce sewing and textiles items. The portfolio will be internally assessed by the tutor before being approved by the External Moderator. The moderator visits either at the end of the course* / the end of year*
*Depending on the number of cohorts scheduled across an academic year.
When does the course start?
The course starts in January 2025.
Length of course
The course will run two evenings per week for a total of six weeks (Subject to change).
